Discuss both views: technology makes people more or less social

The impact of modern technology on our social lives is a topic of considerable debate. While some maintain that digital tools have brought people closer together, others contend that they have driven us apart. This essay will examine both perspectives before explaining why I believe technology is, on balance, socially beneficial.

On the one hand, there are strong grounds for arguing that technology fosters isolation. Many people now spend hours scrolling through social media in solitude, and face-to-face conversation is frequently interrupted by the urge to check a phone. Critics also note that online interaction is often superficial, replacing the depth of real friendship with a stream of brief, impersonal messages.

On the other hand, technology has clearly expanded our capacity to connect. Video calls and messaging apps allow families separated by continents to remain in daily contact, something that was unimaginable a generation ago. Furthermore, online communities enable individuals with niche interests or shared struggles to find one another and offer mutual support, which can be especially valuable for people who feel excluded in their immediate surroundings.

In my view, although technology can encourage unhealthy habits, its power to maintain and create relationships outweighs these drawbacks. Used thoughtfully, it complements rather than replaces genuine human contact. I therefore believe that modern technology has, overall, made people more sociable.
